The Department of Natural Sciences is one of many departments at the University which offers Industry-based Practicum, also known as “Practicum 3B” to their student-teachers. This course exposes students to the various avenues that dynamic subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Environmental Studies can take them.

The far-reaching use and impact of Natural Sciences are evident in all areas of life, globally. Students, therefore, have the opportunity to see the offerings of their area of specialization through authentic experiences at institutions such as UWI Life Science Lab, science laboratories, electronics companies, technology stores, companies and Government organizations. These organizations are selected based on companies seeking interns, lecturers who seek placement opportunities on behalf of the department and students’ suggestions.

Industry-based Practicum in this Department is an essential component of each student’s appreciation of the Natural Sciences and his/her need to teach it. The Department of Natural Science employs industrial research as a backbone to the body of this course. It provides the opportunity for students to gain experience and knowledge as they unearth how essential Natural Science is in the field of medicine, technology, engineering, architecture, agriculture and many more.

During the industry-based practicum, assessments are done internally and externally at the student’s practicum placement. Afterwhich, at the end of the student’s placement, they are usually asked to analyze and report their experience in the form of a presentation as part of the course assessment with an emphasis on the use of Natural Science during their placement. Students will also develop various products and participate in seminars as required for the completion of this course.

There are 3 credits awarded by the University through the Department of Natural Science. These credits are granted to students who successfully complete this phase. For further information, please consult the Department’s industry-based practicum manual or reach out to the Head of the Department or the Department’s Industry-Based coordinator.
