Undergraduate Program

Industry-based Practicums

Introduction

Phase 4, Part A (Action Learning) runs parallel with Part B or what is called “Industry-based practicum” for specific departments. At present this course is a requirement for those departments whose programmes have a significant practical component. These Departments include Mathematics, Guidance Counselling, Natural Sciences and Industrial Technology. Based on current recommendations, however, it is expected that in the near future, this practice will become a feature of all departments.

For Industry-based practicum, each department employs a different approach to the structure of the course, however still aim to preserve the same essence of providing specialized field experiences/industry-based opportunity for students-teachers to gain first-hand experience in fields for which they will prepare their future students. In doing so, this experience allows student teachers to visit and learn about the operations of relevant industries in which their pupils will eventually work. The course duration differs based on the student’s Department of specialization.

There are 3 credits awarded by the University through the student’s department of specialization. These credits are granted to students who successfully complete this phase. For further information, please consult with your Department’s industry-based practicum manuals or reach out to your Head of Department or the University’s Practicum Unit.
