“The Reflective Practicum: In-School Immersion Part A was an experience that taught me a great deal about teaching and learning in the real world. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share two weeks with a welcoming class and cooperating teacher, where I felt comfortable putting into practice the theories that I had been learning. Through this experience, I was able to improve my lesson planning skills, apply appropriate classroom management strategies, and increase my mental fortitude as an individual. The support of my supervisor also made this phase of practicum one that I can reflect on positively, as her assistance made the long nights and early mornings less overwhelming. Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations, and I am grateful that I was able to garner such valuable lessons that will remain with me on my journey as a prospective educator.”

Cooperating Teacher : A Work of Art

“To truly mould and guide young impressionable minds, one should prepare to be moulded and guided as well. Practicum 2022 was an interesting time as students were still operating in the online space. Working face-to-face is one thing, but being able to navigate the platforms while keeping your students captivated is another art that must be perfected. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Cleon and Gabrielle during their practicum. A willingness to learn and improve their craft paved the way for quite an enriching experience for the trainees, students and myself. Naturally, the trainees had their doubts about their approach, but, most importantly, they came with a determination to win, a willingness to learn and the boldness to quickly dispel those doubts. They collaborated while adding colours, shapes perspectives and passion each day to the canvas and this made the difference between ‘a good’ and ‘a great’ practicum experience.”

“It was no walk in the park. On my first day, I made so many mistakes I felt dejected and thought it was the end. However, my supervisor’s feedback helped me to overcome those errors. There were good days and bad days, but thank God I was successful and the experience was rewarding.”

“Surprisingly, my first week went well. However, I had some challenges with classroom management, but support from my supervisor and cooperating teacher helped me to improve in this area. I learnt how to implement positive reinforcement to get more from my students. I became more patient and empathetic. I am thankful for the experience gained.”
