Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Programme presents students with the realities of education as a vehicle for sustainable development over a duration of 18 months. This programme seeks to empower participants for professional practice and responsible leadership through a rich, varied and dynamic curriculum and provide a higher degree programme that will enable them to engage in continued research activities that contribute to sustainable development. The Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Programme is for all qualified persons who provide training in the fields of education, business, health and other private/public sectors. The MAT is designed to certify candidates in one of three programme areas; Primary Education, Secondary Education and Adult Education. The coursework integrates content and pedagogy with a strong emphasis on essential teaching competencies. 

 

The Master of Arts in Teaching programme seeks to provide participants with an understanding of the current trends of creating and using technology for sustainable education. Therefore, facilitating critical thinking for the growth and development of education in Jamaica and the world. This Programme engages students in worthwhile research that will result in increased knowledge and experience such as the integration of knowledge across fields of study and industries. This kind of learning environment will inspire the clientele to become responsible leaders and entrepreneurs in the field of education while participating in designing, developing, implementing and evaluating educational programmes.   The MAT Programme boasts a dynamic and integrated curriculum that will empower students to be good education practitioners, therefore, the curriculum exposes participants to foundational and advanced courses in education, technology, sustainability and research. 

 

This Graduate Programme also consists of a practicum component, referred to as Progressive Practicum. This practicum can be done at any HEART Trust/ NSTA Institution, NCTVET Institution, Universities, Teachers’ Colleges, Community Colleges, Polytechnics, Colleges/Training Departments recognized and or established by the Government of Jamaica to prepare special experts (e.g., The National Police College of Jamaica). However, the selected institution must be approved by the Ministry of Education and the UCJ. Students also must ensure that they facilitate a course at the institution in the content area that they have their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. 

 

To successfully complete this course students will need to submit a Master of Arts in Teaching Internal/ External Practicum Assessment Instrument, Progressive Practicum Consultation Log, Progressive Practicum Fieldwork Data Collection Sheet and Report Form for Progressive Practicum. Upon completion, students will be awarded 3 credits. 

Prerequisite

Student teachers must satisfy the prerequisites of each practicum course, as the progressive nature of practicum dictates that each reflective practicum course is the prerequisite for the next in the sequence. hence all student teachers must complete fundamentals of teaching course before enrolling this phase of practicum
