Master of Science in Counselling and Social Work

The Master of Science in Counselling and Social Work programme at The Mico University College prepares Social Practitioners for excellence in the fields of Counselling and Social Work. The courses in the programme cover issues related to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of various conditions and they offer participants opportunities to undertake research and practicum in related institutions. The programme is ideal for Practitioners who desire advanced clinical competencies and skills to meet the needs of a growing body of individuals who are faced with social, emotional and psychological challenges. Graduates of this programme will be highly motivated to revolutionize the fields of Counselling and Social Work and provide services which will help the population to lead more meaningful lives.

 

As such this Programme aims to engage participants  in psychotherapy with individuals and groups. Participants will be able to utilize prior knowledge and knowledge and skills gained through research, lectures, seminars and practical experiences to implement counselling programmes in schools and communities. Participants will also learn how to provide exceptional leadership to schools and community agencies in the areas of child development through professional development workshops, seminars and conferences. Throughout this Graduate programme participants will garner the knowledge and skills needed to implement legal, health and education programmes needed to address the emotional, physical, social and financial needs of their client. Fundamentally, students learn and practice how to model high levels of professionalism through effective communication, teamwork and confidentiality.

The Master of Science in Counselling and Social Work programme is scheduled to be completed in twenty-four (24) months. Participants will complete 58 credits.  This Programme also has a practicum element to guarantee the successful integration of graduates into the working world, based on its dynamic nature and the ongoing demands of educational professionals. As such, during Year 2 Semester 1 of the Programme students will be engaged in an  Practicum exercise. Upon successful completion participants will be awarded 10 credits by the University College.

Prerequisite

Student teachers must satisfy the prerequisites of each practicum course, as the progressive nature of practicum dictates that each reflective practicum course is the prerequisite for the next in the sequence. hence all student teachers must complete fundamentals of teaching course before enrolling this phase of practicum
