The Post Graduate Diploma is designed to promote excellence in pedagogy and andragogy by equipping participants with the requisite skills, knowledge and dispositions of trained graduates who are change agents in education. The courses in the programme cover topical issues in educational theory and the design, delivery and evaluation of curricula. The Programme also offers participants opportunities to undertake practicum in schools and related institutions. The programme is ideal for those who are have earned qualification in a subject matter but who are professionally unqualified or underqualified in teaching. With this Post Graduate Diploma, participants will be qualified to teach at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Holders of this qualification are able to demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical and practical underpinnings of education, understand the implications of human exceptionalities/diversities within institutions and demonstrate digital literacy in lesson preparation and delivery. Graduates of this Programme are also able to apply higher order thinking to problem solving in the classroom, demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of pedagogy and andragogy by designing context specific curricula with effective teaching and learning methodologies, assessment strategies and evaluation models and use a wide range of teaching/learning strategies to cater to students in different contexts. The Programme is equipped to allow students the opportunity to display an appreciation for lifelong learning through continuous research and engagement in training, demonstrate the intellectual qualities of the reflective practitioner and display professional conduct in the work environment both in teams and individually while displaying an affinity to adjust/adopt to change and challenges in varying circumstances.
For a more holistic approach, there is a practicum element to the Post Graduate Diplom in Teaching Certification. The structure of the practicum mirrors that of the undergraduate programme with a Reflective Practicum: In School Immersion Part A offered in Semester 2 and Reflective Practicum: In School Immersion Part B and Reflective Practicum: Action Learning both offered in Semester 4 of the Academic Year.
In terms of the credit allocations, 12 total credits are awarded for Reflective Practicum. There are 3 credits awarded for Reflective Practicum: In School Immersion Part A and 3 additional credits for Part B. The remaining 6 credits are awarded to students who have successfully completed Reflective Practicum: Action Learning.
